The project is to renovate a fifty years old house on a hill around Tien-Mu area which is located on preserved area. Due to the local building code, we cannot change the original structure of the house. Therefore, the design of the new house should start from within the footprint of the old house rather than a new site plan from the site.
The function requirement from the family is rather simple – 4 bedrooms for family members and a guest room and some public spaces.
We tried to open up the perimeter of the old house and merged their living spaces into the surrounding natural landscape and garden.
We demolished all the nonbearing walls at ground floor on the south side facing downhill and connect the living and dining space with garden with water feature and a view with the whole Tien-Mu area.
All the bed rooms located on the second floor. We created a courtyard to bring in sun light which located next to a small living space and corridor. The stair located in the courtyard is able to connect the private spaces on the second floor to the outdoors roof terrace which was not often used before, and became the most beloved gathering space after the restoration.
This project is not only a restoration for the 50 years old house, but it becomes much more accessible for the family members to again embrace the natural environment as their new life style which they took for granted from the past.
